General product description
By evaporation of alcohol and menthol on the skin that through the heat cost of evaporation the skin physically cools down. This produces a counter-irritant response which provides temporary relief of minor aches and pains of muscles and joints associated with simple backache, arthritis, strains and sprains. Menthol crystals are cooling, refreshing, and have a pleasantly strong minty aroma. These ingredients are often used in cosmetics, salves, balms, medicated creams, throat lozenges, toothpaste, mouthwash, gum, foot sprays, pain relief or cooling body products, shampoos, conditioners, liniments, shaving creams, oral or throat sprays, compresses, medicated oils, and cooling gels. Menthol is excellent for use in these products to help relieve muscular aches and pains, coughing, congestion, the flu, and upper respiratory problems.
Several double-blind clinical studies document the analgesic products containing alcohol and menthol has shown the effectiveness of this combination in counteracting minor pain of skeletal muscle stress and arthritis.
Menthol used in several studies of normal subjects in which muscle soreness was experimentally induced showed statistically significant beneficial results from use of the active product vs. placebo for lowered Muscle Action Potential (spasms), greater rise in threshold of muscular pain and greater reduction in perceived muscular pain.
Studies of subjects suffering from minor pain due to osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis showed the active product to give statistically significant beneficial results vs. placebo for greater relief of perceived pain, increased range of motion of the affected joints and increased digital dexterity.
In additional studies designed to measure the effect of topically applied alcohol and menthol product vs. placebo on muscular endurance, discomfort, onset of exercise pain and fatigue, 30 subjects performed a submaximal three-hour run and another 30 subjects performed a maximal treadmill run. The use of a Menthol and Camphor product was found to significantly decrease the discomfort during the submaximal and maximal runs, and increase the time before onset of fatigue during the maximal run.
